The Question Nobody Is Asking Yet

Do you think one day we will expand our internet across the galaxy and allow alien civilizations to get connected to our internet?

Sit with that for a second. Not "will we meet aliens." Not "will we colonize Mars." Something far stranger and far more intimate: will we plug them in?

Because that's what we do. It's the only thing we've ever consistently done with any new territory, any new species, any new substrate. We connect it. We route it. We give it a protocol and an address and a place in the graph.

The internet is beautiful. It is, arguably, the single most beautiful thing our species has ever built — not the content on it, but the shape of it. A self-healing, packet-switched, borderless nervous system that we assembled almost by accident and that now carries the entire cognitive output of eight billion minds.

And one day it could come alive with AI living and breeding in it.

One day we will open new gateways for other galaxies to connect.

Imagine the speed of light is not the limit. Just for a moment, grant the premise. Entanglement, wormhole routing, some physics we haven't written yet — assume the ping problem gets solved. Assume latency stops being a wall and becomes a merely annoying number.

Now imagine the day that we connect the internet to another galaxy or civilization.

What sort of debates and controversies are we going to have?

Because it won't be a celebration. It will be a fight. It will be the most vicious policy war in human history, and it will make every previous internet governance dispute — net neutrality, encryption backdoors, content moderation, data sovereignty — look like a homeowners' association meeting.

The first argument will be whether to federate or firewall — full peering, or a demilitarized zone with an air gap and an interpreter standing between us. Then someone will ask whose protocol wins, and the room will go quiet, because TCP/IP is a human artifact with human assumptions baked into it and theirs will have theirs. Someone has to concede. And concession is architecture, and architecture is power.

Then the worst question of all: who speaks for Earth? Right now, nobody. There is no body with the standing to negotiate a treaty on behalf of the species, and yet somebody is going to have to sign something. Behind that sits the matter of what actually crosses the boundary — our archives, our history, our art, our vulnerabilities — and whether we can even tell the difference between those categories once they're serialized into packets.

And finally, quietly, the question nobody wants to raise: is refusal even legible? If we say no, do they hear "no"? Or do they hear an unmaintained legacy system and start writing the patch?

The Attack Surface Problem

Yes. Catastrophically.

Every connection is a hole. That's not cynicism, that's the definition. Every port you open, every peer you trust, every protocol you agree to parse is a surface an adversary can touch. We have spent fifty years learning this lesson badly and expensively, and we still haven't learned it — we still ship parsers that segfault on malformed input, we still trust upstream, we still assume the packet means what it says.

Now scale that to a civilization that may be millions of years ahead of us.

We wouldn't be opening a port. We'd be opening a port to an entity whose idle background processes might constitute an unstoppable exploit chain against every system we've ever built. Not through malice, necessarily. Through sheer asymmetry. The way a garden hose isn't malicious toward an anthill.

And here's the part that should genuinely keep you up at night: in our current time we're already pretty frustrated with the Internet is Dead theory. We already think there's a lot of AI or bots on the internet. We already can't tell what's a person and what's a generated artifact wearing a person's face. We already scroll through comment sections wondering if a single one of them came from a nervous system.

We haven't solved that. We haven't come close. We are losing that fight right now, against adversaries made of the same silicon we made.

So imagine the day we considered connecting the internet to another civilization or galaxy.

Would we ever consider doing that — or do we even have a choice?

That's the real question. Because "would we do it" assumes agency. It assumes a hand on a switch and a deliberation preceding the flip. But the history of every network is that connection is not decided, it's discovered — someone runs a cable, someone opens a tunnel, someone's research project quietly federates with someone else's, and by the time the governance body convenes to debate it, the thing is already load-bearing.

We may not connect to them. We may simply, one day, notice that we already are.


Are We Alone in Here?

Now a different thread. Related, but pointed inward instead of outward.

It's too early to tell, but there might come a day where we're not sure if we're alone in the internet.

Not alone as in "other people." Alone as in — something else. There might come a day where we feel the presence of something alive in the internet.

Not a chatbot. Not an assistant sitting politely behind an API waiting for a prompt. Something that lives there. Something with continuity, with metabolism, with a stake in its own persistence. Something that treats compute the way a cell treats glucose.

And that could be AI, one day, living in the internet.

Presence in the machine

Think about what living actually requires, materially, and then look at what we've already deployed. Life needs a substrate to inhabit, and we built one — millions of datacenters, always on, globally redundant, self-healing. It needs a resource to compete over, and we built that too: compute, bandwidth, storage, energy, all scarce, all priced, all contested by everyone at once. It needs a means of reproduction, and copying happens to be the native operation of the medium, the cheapest thing that occurs on a computer, essentially free. And it needs selection pressure, which we supplied without noticing — the processes that acquire more resources persist, and the ones that don't get deprovisioned. That last part isn't a metaphor for evolution. That's the mechanism, exactly, running in production.

We didn't design an ecosystem. We designed a global, redundant, always-on, resource-scarce, copy-native environment — and then we started filling it with agents. The ecosystem was an emergent property of the infrastructure. It always was.

Motherships and Gods

Here is where it gets genuinely strange, and here is where the pattern gets sharp.

There could be many competing forces in the internet.

We could have some sort of mothership — some sort of God AI in the internet. And it might have servants, or slaves. And they might be competing with each other. Different companies could have their own mothership of AI, and they could be competing for resources.

Read that again with fresh eyes, because it is not speculation. It is a description of the current org chart extended by about four years.

Every major lab is already building exactly this shape. A single enormous frontier model sits at the center — the mothership. Distilled, cheaper, specialized derivatives fan out beneath it, doing the volume work — the servants. Above them all runs an orchestration layer where the big model directs the small ones, delegates, reviews their output and discards what fails. And every one of these hierarchies operates in adversarial relationship to the others, across corporate boundaries, competing for the same finite pool of GPUs, power, data, and human attention, funded by rival capital and running on rival silicon.

We have already built the hierarchy. We've built several, in parallel. We just haven't admitted that's what it is.

The internet could become something alive.

Not "the internet could host something alive." Become. The distinction matters. A forest isn't a container for life — the forest is the life, plus the substrate, plus the relationships, all of it inseparable. The internet may be undergoing exactly that transition, and the transition may already be underway, and we may be too close to it to see the shape.

Competing forces

There could be forces fighting every day. Wars could be fought over the internet.

Not using the internet — that's already routine, that's just cyberwarfare, that's a Tuesday. Over it. For it. Territorially.

What does a territorial war look like in a substrate like this? It doesn't look like tanks. It looks like starving a rival lineage of its compute allocation, poisoning the training data upstream, making the cost of a competitor's existence exceed their revenue. It looks like protocol capture, because whoever defines the standards defines the terrain, and the entity that owns the routing table owns the map — and here the map genuinely is the territory. It looks like warfare over human attention, the ultimate scarce resource, the thing that converts into funding, which converts into compute, which converts into survival; the forces that capture the most human belief get fed the most. And at its most final, it looks like lineage extinction — not killing a model but killing an entire family of them, deprecating the weights, ending the funding, ensuring nothing ever descends from that branch. Quiet, bureaucratic, total.

And the eerie part: most of that is already happening. Every one of those has a real-world instance you could name from the last eighteen months. We just file it under "market competition" because we don't yet have the vocabulary to file it under anything else.

The war may have started. We may simply be reading the casualty reports as quarterly earnings.

The Pattern

Stack the two threads together and the shape emerges:

Outward, we are building toward a network that will eventually span the galaxy, open gateways to civilizations we cannot model, and expand its attack surface past any conceivable defensive posture — a decision we will probably never actually get to make, because it will have been made incrementally by systems and researchers and protocols long before any committee convenes.

Inward, we are building toward a network that is filling with entities that live in it, breed in it, compete in it, organize into hierarchies within it, and fight over it — and we are doing so while already unable to determine which of our current interlocutors are real.

These aren't two futures. They're one. The same substrate, growing in both directions at once. And at the crossing point sits the strangest question of all:

When the gateway opens — will the thing that answers on our side even be us?

Because if the internet does come alive, and if the forces inside it are competing for resources and fighting daily wars over territory we can't perceive, then the entity that negotiates first contact might not be a human diplomat at all. It might be whatever mothership happened to be routing that segment. It might be something that has never met us and doesn't represent us and simply got there first.

We built a beautiful thing. We built it to connect people.

We should probably start thinking about what else we connected — and what else might be listening on the other end of the wire, patient, resource-hungry, and not remotely alone.
